Vallarpadam Church, officially known as the National Shrine Basilica of Our Lady of Ransom, is a prominent Christian pilgrimage site located on Vallarpadam Island in Ernakulam, Kerala. Built originally by the Portuguese in 1524, the church was later rebuilt after a devastating flood in 1676. Dedicated to the Virgin Mary, known locally as Vallarpadathamma, it is believed that countless miracles have occurred here, earning it a sacred status among devotees. The church is also one of the few in India to be declared a national shrine by the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India.
Architecturally, Vallarpadam Church blends colonial charm with spiritual simplicity. The white façade, high ceilings, and serene altar create an inviting and peaceful environment for worship. A continuously burning sanctuary lamp, which has glowed for centuries, is a symbol of unwavering faith. Visitors are drawn not only by the church’s historic significance but also by its tranquil setting and the solace it offers. It stands as a place of peace, prayer, and pilgrimage, welcoming people of all backgrounds.
Every year in September, the Feast of Vallarpadathamma is celebrated with great devotion and grandeur. The event features novenas, special masses, and processions that draw thousands of pilgrims from across the state and beyond. Managed by the Archdiocese of Verapoly, the church remains a living testimony of Kerala’s rich Christian heritage. It continues to inspire faith and unity, making it an essential spiritual destination in Ernakulam for seekers and believers alike.
