Malayattoor Church, located on the scenic slopes of the Western Ghats in Ernakulam district, is one of the most important Christian pilgrimage centers in Kerala. Dedicated to St. Thomas the Apostle, who is believed to have prayed at this very spot during his mission to India in the 1st century AD, the church holds immense religious and historical significance. The shrine is perched atop the Malayattoor Hill, offering both spiritual solace and panoramic views, making it a unique blend of devotion and natural beauty.
Every year, especially during the Holy Week and Malayattoor Perunal festival, thousands of pilgrims undertake a barefoot trek up the steep hill as an act of penance and faith. Along the way, devotees stop at 14 stations of the cross, reflecting on the Passion of Christ. The hill is also dotted with natural springs and caves believed to be associated with the apostle. The church complex includes both the hilltop shrine and the Malayattoor St. Thomas Parish Church at the base.
Besides its religious importance, Malayattoor Church is also a popular destination for nature lovers and trekkers. Surrounded by lush greenery, peaceful ambiance, and a spiritually charged atmosphere, the church offers a serene escape from urban life while inviting reflection, prayer, and exploration.
